NBN Frequent Asked Questions

Check your address to find out about the rollout in your area.

If the NBN is available at your address, you can order a service from one of the phone and internet providers offering services over the NBN.

If the NBN is not currently available at your address, please continue to check our website for updates.

Where the network has been rolled out we’ll also be in touch directly to let you know your home or business is ready to get connected to services over the NBN.

The NBN is essential for Australia’s digital evolution and is designed to provide access to a minimum level of broadband services across the nation. It presents opportunity in education, business, entertainment, health care and sociability giving everyone the potential to be more productive, more creative, more efficient and more connected for decades to come.

If you live in an area where NBN fibre is available existing phone lines, ADSL internet, Telstra/Optus cable internet, and some Telstra Velocity fibre services will be disconnected and replaced by the NBN*. When we complete the National Broadband Network (NBN) fibre install in your area we will notify you by direct mail that the new network is ready and advise the date on which the old network will be switched off.

If you live in an area serviced by NBN Fixed Wireless or Satellite, it’s your choice whether you switch to the NBN, what services you take up and which service provider you use.

Check your address to find out about the rollout in your area.

*The NBN is replacing many landline networks for phone and internet services, including copper and the majority of HFC networks. Services provided over existing fibre networks (including in-building, health and education networks) and some special and business services may not be affected.

A standard installation of NBN Co equipment is currently free of charge. There is a range of competitive plans available from a number of providers. Speak to your preferred service provider to see if there are any other charges such as set up or activation fees.

If you’re currently under contract with a provider and want to move to the NBN, ask your service provider if any fees might be payable if you end your contract early.

At the time you arrange your NBN service, your service provider might also invite you to purchase or rent a new router to help share your internet service around the different rooms of your home or business – but from a technical perspective this is optional.

Remember, NBN Co doesn’t sell direct to the public, so give your service provider a call to find out more.

Yes. “Number porting” rules will not change with the introduction of the NBN.

To be sure you keep your phone number, ask your service provider to confirm that they will keep your phone number when you transfer your service over to the NBN.

The NBN utility box will be installed on an outside wall of your home or business, so you don’t need to be present. If there are any issues accessing the outside of your home or business, our contractors will speak to you directly if you are available or alternatively they will leave their contact details for you to contact them.

You can ask to see the contractor’s identification that confirms they are working on behalf of NBN.

A standard installation of the NBN fibre utility box at your home or business will be free of charge once you have ordered a monthly plan from your Retail Service Provider.

NBN will to install the NBN utility box as close as practical to any existing telecommunications utility box so as little disruption is made to your property as possible.

We will install the NBN cable at your home or business underground if you request an underground installation and agree to pay for it.

We will complete the underground installation when the NBN is available in your area.

cess of connecting your home or office to Australia’s national broadband network (NBN). Most NBN lead-in cable installation is done underground, within a trench, for safety reasons.

Underground NBN lead-in cable installation provides maximum protection from any interference. Furthermore, most new NBN lead-in cables are packed with a gel-like substance to keep out moisture.

Our technicians will work with you to organise the lead in cable installation.

If you are building or renovating, we recommend you reach out to us at the very early stage of your build as that will save you on the long run.

Our NBN technicians can retrofit NBN cabling in existing homes and businesses as well as during renovations.

We understand a reliable internet service throughout your building is essential for modern living.

Did you recently got your NBN connected and the technician has installed your NBN box & modem in your bedroom, garage or other unpractical location?

Moving your NBN NTD, can it be moved to another area?

Yes, moving your NBN box is certainly doable. If you’ve had your NBN box installed in an unpractical location, we would  recommend calling us to discus your options.

As there are a few elements within the NBN box setup, you’ll of course need to engage a highly trained licensed technician who is able to identify the current location, and the new location and make sure all parts of your home wirings are able to be re-run or connected from the new connection point.

NBN box relocation approach:

Our licencsed NBN technicians will help you;

step 1Identify the current NBN box location and note all internally connected cables (through roof cavity).

step 2Identify the new NBN box location and feasibility for location.

step 3Identify all the internal wiring connections (phone and data) are able to be fed back to the new NBN location.

step 4Re-run and terminate the copper and fibre connections into the NTD from the PCD (outside connection).

step 5Make sure your NBN connection box lights return to normal status

step 6Ensure all services phone, data (internet) and VoIP all return to normal function.

How much does it cost to relocate your NBN NTD?

The cost for relocating your NTD can vary depending on the size of your house and current location of the NTD. Generally, though most NTD’s are installed within a garage or at the BEP (building entry point) where your conduit comes in from the street.

Although the cost may vary, I’ll probably suggest that an average cost to relocate your existing NBN box inside your house will be between $200-$800 depending on a few factors.

Are there any alternatives to moving the NBN Box?

Yes, of course! Depending on the exact reason why you want to move your NBN box, there could be alternate ways to resolve your problem. I’d say there are three main reasons why users may want to relocate their box.

step 1The location of the box is impracticable or subject to overheating/water damage i.e in a garage, kitchen or bedroom.

step 2You want to get the most speed out of your NBN connection and want it as close to your TV, PlayStation or computer as possible.

step 3You wish to improve your wireless throughout the house.

Whatever your reasons are; our team will be able to provide you the best advise to get the most out of your NBN connection

Generally, we would recommend installing a CAT6 data cable between your NTD and your desired modem or phone location. We generally recommend installing your ISP (Internet Service Provider) modem near your TV or home office and then distributing your internal cables from that central point out to your wireless access points and other peripherals around your home.

We always recommend installation a proper commercial yet affordable wireless access point (WAP) to ensure all your devices are connected to the internet without comprising on the speed.

If you require internet to an  outbuilding, shed or a granny flat that shares the same address as the primary residence on a block of land, you can not apply for a new NBN network connection. This is because every connection must have a unique address and, as the primary building has used the address already, you may not utilise it again.

In order to connect to the NBN, an extension of the existing connection in the primary residence is needed – whether that is by extending the signal of your local Wi-Fi network or by installing an additional service through a registered cabler.

Our team has helped clients to deliver internet to granny flats and sheds and would love to help you.

tickTest your NBN or ADSL service at the Network Boundary point of your property.

tickIf required, we can liaise with your internet service provider (ISP) to solve any any external ISP faults.

tickCheck your internet speed and fix any issues if you getting is lower than the optimal speed in your area.

tickProvide a detailed report for landlords and strata management if required.

Generally, having your internet connection tested by our  technicians will give you peace of mind and we’ll help to resolve internet related issues.

Points to consider when planning your new home NBN cabling:
